Field Technician (August 2024)
Overview
Berkeley Air Monitoring Group is seeking a Field Technician to join our small, dynamic company. The ideal candidate for this position is someone with a strong interest in air quality monitoring and data management, who is looking to gain hands-on experience in the field. The position is based in Berkeley, California, and requires regular travel throughout Alameda County and as far east as Stockton.

We work to mitigate the problems associated with the use of polluting household energy services. Our vision is the widespread adoption of cleaner and more efficient household energy solutions for global health, gender, and climate benefits. To this end, our company provides scientifically based testing, monitoring, and evaluation of household energy technologies and fuels for a range of domestic and international clients in both the public and private sectors.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
Instrument Management and Fieldwork
- Drive to locations in Alameda County and the Central Valley, California, to meet with electrical contractors once or twice a week, collecting and redistributing air quality instrumentation as needed.
- Download and check data from the instruments.
- Follow established protocols for instrument management, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Coordinate with local partners on the location and timing of instrument pickup and redistribution.
Data Management and Analysis
- Perform basic QA/QC checks on data sets collected from the field.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any data-related issues.
- Assist in the compilation, organization, and analysis of data sets.
- Support coding scripts for data collection, cleaning, and processing (using tools like Excel, R, ODK Central, ODK Collect, Mobenzi, etc.).
Communication and Coordination
- Communicate regularly with supervisors to provide updates on field activities and data quality.
- Coordinate with local partners and stakeholders to ensure smooth operation of field activities.
Desired Professional Skills and Experience
- Ability to process data, including writing and checking code.
- Ability to work in MS Excel, MS Word, R, and well as Google applications.
- Proficiency in Spanish.
- Experience working with scientific instrumentation and environmental sensors is a plus.
- Strong ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and coordinate with multiple partners.
- Driver’s license and access to legally registered and insured vehicle.
- A bachelors or master’s degree in the sciences is preferred but not required.
Hours, Compensation, and Start Date
This is a part-time short-term non-exempt position ranging from 10-20 hours per week for approximately 6 months. There is some flexibility in both the weekly hours and duration of the position. The pay is $24 to $30/hour, commensurate with experience and education. Benefits include paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, as well as a monthly cell phone stipend. (Part- time employees are not eligible to participate in the company health insurance program.) Mileage will be reimbursed at the U.S. federal government rate.
